FRIDAY RESULTS

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) won the 200-individual medley in a school-record setting time and Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) also established another school standard in as many days as the Kutztown University women's swimming team finished second day of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Cumberland Valley High School Friday evening in second place.
 
With 139 points, Kutztown trails West Chester (272) and was just ahead of third-place Shippensburg (136). Rounding out the top five is Clarion (112) and Gannon (108).
 
Overall, the Golden Bears set a trio of school records, bringing their two-day total to five. The 400-yard medley free relay quartet of Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton), Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Jeppesen and Lauren Malloy (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) easily lowered the old mark to earn their place at the top of the school charts in that event.
 
The most impressive performance of the day may have belonged to Jeppesen.  She blew away the field in her event in 2 minutes, 4.59 seconds, lowering the previous mark she established at last year's NCAA championship meet (2:05.42). Jeppesen won her event by more than three seconds.
 
"She destroyed the field in that race," Kutztown coach Tim Flannery said. "She swam that race like a house on fire."
 
Crigler, who set the school standard in the 1,000-yard free style on Thursday's opening day, was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.64). That effort bested Ashley Singer's previous record (5:06.01), which was set in 2007. Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) also beat the old school record when she finished fourth in the same event (5:04.83). Also earning points in the event for the Golden Bears was Malloy, who placed 12th (5:13.68).
 
Malloy, Hinsdale, Jeppesen and Shapiro finished fifth in the 400-yard relay (3:56.86). The previous mark was 3:59.77 set by Kelly Ross, Claudine Gruver, Elizabeth Thoryk and Elizabeth Powell at the 1988 NCAA championships in Canton, Ohio.
 
"I am ecstatic with how we are swimming through two days," Flannery said. "It's wild to watch them take it to the competition. I am excited, but I know the two toughest days are coming up for us and we have to be ready. We've been getting in scoring position in the morning and they are going after everybody in the evening."
 
The Golden Bears 200-yard free relay team of Shapiro, Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity), Hinsdale and Stephanie Kearns (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) was ninth (1:38.93). Freshman Zoe Sianis (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) was 10th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.02).
 
The meet continues Saturday with preliminary action at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
 
"I know the girls are feeding off of each other," Flannery said. "They are seeing everybody swim fast and it's infectious. They are in a good place mentally. We have to keep getting people in position to score."
