SATURDAY RESULTS
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) won another individual championship and was part of a record-setting relay as the Kutztown University women's swimming team enjoyed a memorable day at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Cumberland Valley High School on Saturday night.
Â
Jeppesen's victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 3.99 seconds) and sterling leadoff leg on the school-record setting 800-yard free relay has Kutztown in fourth place with 244 points heading into the final day of competition. Jeppesen teamed with
Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin),
Lauren Malloy (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and
Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) to place second in the event in a time of 7:43.58. The quartet lowered the previous school standard set last year by nearly 10 seconds.
Â
"I am in shock," Jeppesen said. "That was pretty awesome to set the school record in the relay. It's good to see our hard work pay off in the pool. Everybody is feeding off of each other and we all had good splits during our race. We were pretty excited once we finished our relay race."
Â
Wolkom finished the relay by swimming a 1:54.40 split as the anchor. Through three days, the Golden Bears have established six school records.
Â
The relay victory capped another awesome effort by Jeppesen, who won her second individual event in two days. Friday night, Jeppesen captured the 200-yard individual medley in a school record time of 2:04.59. A slight adjustment helped Jeppesen cruise to victory. Jeppesen narrowly missed establishing the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke by 5-tenths of a second.
Â
"I pretty much knew that I had to go all out," Jeppesen said. "I sat back in the morning but I knew if went all out, I didn't think anybody could catch me. I still can't believe it. It's great to win an individual event, but I was glad I was able to help the team score points and represent Kutztown."
Â
There were other great efforts for the Golden Bears.
Â
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) swam the second fastest time in KU women's swimming history in finishing ninth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.65).
Lauren Piorkowski (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) was 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.15), the sixth fastest time in the event in school history. Malloy was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.42).
Â
The Golden Bears' 200-yard medley relay of Jeppesen, Shapiro,
Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity), and Hinsdale placed sixth (1:48.79). The quartet set the school record (1:47.47) Thursday night and automatically qualified for next month's NCAA championships. This effort was the second fastest in school history in the event.
Â
West Chester (521), Clarion (302) and Shippensburg (289) are ahead of Kutztown, which leads Gannon (229) and California (228). Kutztown entered the day in second place after two days. Kutztown head coach
Tim Flannery knew the third day would be tough.
Â
"We have never been fourth at this point in the championships since I've been here," Kutztown swimming coach
Tim Flannery said. "I knew we were living on borrowed time being in second place after two days. I like where we are now and the goal heading into the final day is to hold onto fourth or finish higher."
Â
The PSAC Championships conclude Sunday morning with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 5 p.m.
