JOHNSTOWN, PA (February 26, 2010) - The Kutztown University wrestling team has four wrestlers in the semifinals and four still alive in the consolation bracket after the first day of the Super Region I hosted by University of Pitt-Johnstown.

No. 3 seed Chris Sheetz, riding the hottest streak for the Golden Bears, breezed through his first bout with a fall in two minutes and eight seconds. The 125 pounder followed that with a third period pin over Gannon's John Fleming (No. 6 seed). Sheetz has now won by fall in 11 consecutive matches. Sheetz will face off with the No. 2 seed Russell Weakley on Saturday morning when play resumes.

At 141 pounds, John Paukovits is sitting nicely to make a bid for a trip to nationals after winning his first two bouts. He began the day with a pin against Christopher Francis in six minutes, 30 seconds. Paukovits, the No. 3 seed, then took down the No. 3 seed with a 5-2 decision to set up a semifinal contest against Limestone's Jeremy Parker.

No. 1 Tim Darling (184 pounds) and No. 6 Scott Snyder (197 pounds) were both winners of their first two bouts. Darling won by a 5-0 decision and had a 19-3 technical fall in the quarterfinal. He will meet No. 4 Shane Mallory of ESU on Saturday morning. Snyder edged out Mike Walsh 8-4 and took down the No. 3 seeded Andrew Brentzel with a 3-2 decision. Snyder will take on No. 2 Shane Nolan in the semifinal.

The four wrestlers left in the winner's bracket can punch their ticket to Omaha with a win in the opening match on Saturday morning. The top four finisher's of each weight class will move on to national's.

Seniors Brett Martinez (149 pounds) and David Zeek (165 pounds) had their work cut out for them after first round losses, but the veterans rose to the occasion. In the first wrestleback round, Martinez had a convinced 12-0 win and then took down the No. 8 seed Thoran Goodale with a 1-0 decision. He will meet No. 4 Brandon Bradley on Saturday. Zeek pinned West Liberty's Jarrod Shaw (No. 5) in 3:58 before earning an 11-6 decision over the No. 3 seed Jeff Jacobs. Zeek will take on No. 7 Bryce Supko of Limestone.

Kevin Bolinsky opened with a 12-3 major decision before dropping his quarterfinal match. In the wrestleback, Bolinsky had a first period pin in two minutes, 16 seconds and will next take on No. 3 Fred Hale of Mercyhurst.

Austin Williams, No. 6 at 133 pounds, fell in the quarterfinals to the No. 3 seed Corey Bowers. Williams bounce back, narrowly edging Jeffrey Haddad by a score of 7-6. His next opponent is Shippensburg Simon Rice.
