Golden Bears fall short in first day of 300 Music City Classic Tournament

NASHVILLE, TN (March 12, 2010) -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team suffered a tough first day of the 300 Music City Classic Tournament. The Golden Bears went 1-5, earning their only win of the traditional match against Winston Salem 908-762.

Freshman Molly DeMatties (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) bowled the high game of 211 against the Kutztown's sole win of the day. Heather Stamm followed with a 196. Senior Steph Ray (West Lawn, PA/Wilson ) knocked down 170 pins, followed by sophomore Kayla Jones (Johnstown, PA/Westmont-Hilltop) (168) and Heather Shoemaker (West Milton, PA/Lewisburg) with a 163.

Kutztown (56-50, 9-5) is ranked 12th in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA). The Golden Bears lost to 10th ranked Valparaiso 793-723, Fairleigh Dickinson (3) 929-850, and Nebraska (4) 984-915. Kutztown also lost to Northeast (NEC) rival St. Francis N.Y. 861-856 and 14th ranked Minnesota State-Mankato 896-822.

Jones bowled two games over 200. Against Nebraska she bowled a 228 and bowled a game of 214 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Jones is currently second on the team with a high average of 187.0

DeMatties currently holds the team high average of 187.2. In the five games she bowled, she earned two games over 200, bowling a 214 and 2111. She also boweld a 167, 172, and 172 in her remaining matches. 

Kutztown resumes play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.. Saturday's matches will consist of six quad-baker games. Kutztown will compete against Sacred Heart (13), North Carolina A&T, Vanderbilt (2), Central Missouri (6), Louisiana Tech (17), and Florida A&M (18). Admission to the tournament is free of charge.
