Kutztown falls in NEC semifinal

ELMWOOD, N.J. (March 21, 2010) -- The Kutztown University bowling team finished the Northeast Conference in third place after falling, 4-1 to Sacred Heart in a tough battle of the championship semifinals Sunday afternoon.

Kutztown finished the Northeast Conference (NEC) with a 11-7 record and 61-58 overall record.

The Golden Bears finished their final match of the season playing the baker match against Sacred Heart. Kutztown rolled a 200, 192, 191, 157, and 182.  Sacred Heart bowled a 177, 205, 193, 168, and 186.

Kutztown was led by junior Kayla Stamm. Stamm earned team high of 21.2 for the baker frame average. Sophomore Chelsea Adam followed with a 20.4. Sophomore Kayla Jones earned the third highest baker average of the day on the team. She averaged 20.1. Adam bowled an impressive 10-for-10 in filled frames.

Sacred Heart went on to win the NEC title when it beat fifth-seeded and defending champion Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3.5. Both teams were undefeated as they entered the championship round. Adelphi finished in fourth place.

“The season as a whole was good,” head coach Joe Ambrose said. “We are still short of our long-term goal of making it to nationals.”

In the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) released at the end of February, Kutztown was ranked 12th nationally. To make it to the NCAA National Championship, Kutztown needs to place in the top eight.

The 2010 Women's Bowling NCAA Tournament selection show will be webcast on Wednesday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.

“Being a top ranked team requires us to work even harder,” Ambrose said. “We will continue to do that. We have built a solid program very quickly. I'm very excited about the future of this team.”

The NEC will announce the all-tounrmant team later this week.
