Women's golf place first at spring opener

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA (March 28, 2010) - The Kutztown University women's golf team had a 10 stroke improvement on the second day of the McDaniel Invitational to capture first in the opening action of the spring on Sunday. (Complete Results)

The Golden Bears and host McDaniel were tied with final scores of 706, with KU emerging by virtue of tiebreaker. Morgan Todd, who had a five stroke improvement, totaled a 195 to just edge out Anna Bencrisutto by one stroke for the win.

The two schools were neck and neck all weekend, as KU trailed McDaniel 358-357 on the first day and evened things with a 348-349 advantage on the final round.

"We had a lot of improvement out of the girls on the second day," said head coach Rob Fisher. "They struggled a little bit yesterday with the short game, which is expected in the first play after the break. But as the day went on we got better and better with those things and they really rallied."

The first place finish on the Bridge Golf Club was the first since the 2006-07 season, followed by back-to-back second place showings.

Mindy Glatfelter finished the two rounds with a 172 (88-84) to place fourth and lead the Golden Bears. Chelsea Corbo was a stroke behind to place tied for fifth with 173.

Samantha Rumbley rounded out the Golden Bears in the top-10 carding an 89 to finish 177 and ninth place.

After a first round 94, Nina Antos had a four stroke improvement to finish in 18th place. Individually, St. John Fishers Alex Battle took first place with round scores of 79 and 81.

KU will travel to the Lakeshore Country Club for the Gannon Invitational on Sunday April 11 and Monday April 12.
