Golden Bear golfers ready to host Kutztown Invitational

KUTZTOWN, PA (April 15, 2010) – The women's golf team will enjoy a rare home event as they host the Kutztown Invitational at the Berkleigh Country Club on Friday afternoon.

Joining the Golden Bears on the 6,030-yard, par-74 course will be West Chester, Millersville, Mercyhurst, Franklin & Marshall, East Stroudsburg and Gannon.

The Golden Bears will look to carry their momentum over from the last two outings into this weekend's action. In each of the spring invites, KU improved by 10 strokes on the second day to finish first (McDaniel Invite) and third (Gannon Invite).

Junior Samantha Rumbley credits the improvement to familiarity with the courses, which should bode well for the Golden Bears playing on their own turf this weekend.

“The more familiar with the course, the more comfortable we feel,” said Rumbley. “At the Gannon Invite last week, the pin placement stayed the same and I knew how to play the holes better the second time around. The same should apply on Friday, knowing when there is water or where the hole is makes it easier to take chances.”

The Golden Bears have been led this spring by Rumbley, Chelsea Corbo and Mindy Glatfelter who each have an 85.7 average. Over the four rounds, the trio has accumulated 343 strokes, including Rumbley's spring-best 79 on Sunday.

Nina Antos has averaged 89.7 in the spring, while Morgan Todd has a 97.5 average. Todd has been clutch in each of the spring invites, winning the tiebreaker in both for KU.

The Golden Bears will have the luxury of trading in last week's six hour trek across the state for a less than six minute drive from campus to the course.

“We do have a lot of fun on our road trips, making the best out of the long van rides” said Rumbley. “But it will be nice to have a home invite, we'll probably be better rested.”

Head coach Rob Fisher also has his beliefs as to the Golden Bears success on the final rounds lately.

“The familiarity helps, but they also play more motivated after the first day standings,” said Fisher. “We all meet together and discuss the first round and how to improve on it. The next day they go out there and play more determined and deliver a stronger performance.”

Regardless of the reason for success, the Golden Bears will look to place among to the top on Friday. KU will then participate in the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
