Golf team dominates at Kutztown Invitational

Samantha Rumbley and Chelsea Corbo finished side-by-side at second and third place. Morgan Todd and Mindy Glatfelter finished tied for 15th place, as Todd turned in a career best effort to help the Golden Bears shoot a 330 in the seven-team field. The team score was the best all-time by KU at Berkleigh and tied the best performance on a par-74 course set in 2003 at the Cortland State Invitational.

The entire team and coaching staff stood by the 18th green to watch Todd drain an eight foot par putt to complete her solid round. After calculating her scorecard and realizing she shot an 86, Todd and her teammates celebrated with a group fist pumping session.

“It was a real relieving and incredible feeling the way I played today,” said Todd. “After the first few holes I had a better mentality and started to swing better.”

Todd was instrumental in helping the Golden Bears win the fifth-golfer tiebreaker in each of the past two invites, but today her score helped KU earn the win outright.

“I'm really happy with the way Morgan played today,” said head coach Rob Fisher. “It helped us out a lot today.”

Rumbley carded a season-best 78, which tied the KU course record set by Holly Shubilla in 2006. Rumbley had par on each of the final four holes to finish with a 41 on the back nine, after completing the front nine at even par with a 37.

“I felt really good today, especially on the front,” said Rumbley. “I had the same mindset throughout the day and my putting saved me a couple of times.”

Corbo picked up her game in the back nine with two birdies, to shoot a 37. Corbo's finest shot of the day came on the 16th hole when she nailed a chip from about 100 yards out within two feet of the pin to lead to her third birdie of the day.

“I had been working on my approach shot recently,” said Corbo. “It feels great to have that kind of shot and have the hard work pay off.

“I'm proud of how the team played today. We have been working really hard and now we are seeing it with our scores.”

Glatfelter continued her amazing play this season with an 86. After a slow start, she had a birdie and four par's in the last five holes to finish out with a 42 on the back.

The Golden Bears enjoyed their only home event of the season and put on a show for the crowd.

“It was a great showing today,” said Fisher. “A lot of people came out to show their support for us, it was incredible.”

The team responded strongly to the crowd and credits the support of equipment manager Keith “Radar” McCarthy with raising their level of play. Wrestling standout Tim Darling, coached by Fisher in the winter, also rooted on his fellow maroon and gold throughout the day.

“It was cool to see all these people from the athletic department and student-body to show up,” said assistant coach Scott Horoshko. “Especially since we are located off campus, it meant a lot to us.”

The Golden Bears will get right back into action with the two-day East Stroudsburg Invitational starting tomorrow at 1 p.m.
