KU golfers eye top finish at PSAC Championship

KUTZTOWN, PA (April 22, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's golf team is riding a hot streak heading into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday April 24 and Sunday April 25 in Hershey.

The PSAC Championship is traditionally scheduled to be played at the end of the fall portion of the season, however due to weather conditions the tournament was moved to the end of the spring season.

The Golden Bears are playing tremendous heading into the conference battle, having scored first place finishes in each of their invites last weekend and have won three of their last four tournaments.

“Our confidence is flying high,” said head coach Rob Fisher. “The girls have been fighting very hard on every stroke and we are all very excited for this weekend.”

Last year at the 5,281-yard, par-72 Hershey Country Club, the Golden Bears finished in second place, with strong performances from current captains Samantha Rumbley and Chelsea Corbo. Rumbley shot a 78 and 80 on the two days to finish in sixth, while Corbo had scores of 84 and 81 to place tied for 10th.

California (PA) was the 2008-09 champions with a team score of 602, followed by KU's 637. Gannon, who has been solid competition with Kutztown in each of the past three weeks, finished third last year with a 670.

“I've been pleased with how we have played all season on the whole.” said Corbo. “We are feeling confident the way we have been playing lately, which seems to be rubbing off on everyone. We are going for gold this weekend.”

So far this season, Corbo has led the Golden Bears with an 84.3 season average. In 15 rounds, she has shot in the 80's on 13 occasions and a team-low 77 at the Mercyhurst Invite in September. Rumbley is right on Corbo's tail with an 85.2 average. She shot a 79 at Gannon and 78 at the Kutztown Invitational, which gave her a second place finish.

Mindy Glatfelter
, Nina Antos and Morgan Todd will help the Golden Bears make a bid for the title.

Glatfelter (85.7) has carded a score in the 80's 13 times, while Antos (89.9) turned in her best performance last Sunday with an 81. Glatfelter and Antos finished tied for fourth at ESU, combining for a 20-stroke improvement on the final day. Todd's career-best 86 helped propel the Golden Bears to a first place finish at the KU Invite.

“At the beginning of the season I was a little concerned with PSACs being in the spring,” said Rumbley. “In the fall we're all coming right out of summer playing all the time and really comfortable with our games. After seeing the way that we've all been playing and stepping up I'm pretty confident we will play well. It would be nice to end on a good note.”
