WEST CHESTER, PA (May 15, 2010) – Ashley Pinter (Bethlehem/Liberty) capped a memorable weekend by winning the discus and being named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) most outstanding field athlete of the meet at the 2010 championship meet at West Chester University's Farrell Stadium Saturday afternoon. (FINAL RESULTS)
Pinter's effort also helped the Kutztown women finish third overall in the team standings with 99.50 points. Pinter won the hammer throw and was seventh in the shot put Saturday. Overall, her effort in the discus of 144 feet, 10 inches, which was an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark, helped set the tone for a host of strong efforts for the Kutztown women throughout the championship meet.
The Golden Bears showcased plenty of heart as they battled through and conquered some brief adversity late in the meet. Kutztown finished behind Shippensburg (212.50) and Slippery Rock (183). Rounding out the top five team finishers were fourth place East Stroudsburg (97) and Indiana, Pa (68). This was KU's highest finish since placing second in 2007. Overall, the Golden Bears had six student-athletes earn all-PSAC honors.
Cristina Reimer (Chester Springs/Downingtown East) was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:02.20). The Golden Bears' 4 x 100-meter relay squad of Kristen Slack (Royersford/Spring-Ford), Brooke Mathews (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley), Shante Grayer (Allentown/William Allen) and Sarah Messner (Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) also placed second with a quick time of 48.31 seconds. The quartet set a school record in Friday's preliminary round.
The Golden Bears also had a trio of women finish in third place in their individual events, which earned them all-PSAC honors. Lynn Lisofsky (Wilkes Barre/James M. Coughlin) earned a NCAA Division II championship provisional qualifying standard in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.50). Slack leaped 38 feet, 9.75 inches in the triple jump to tie Amanda Shaffer's school record and provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships. Keri Brown (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) set a school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the 1,500-meter run.
However, the Golden Bears saved their best moment for the 4 x 400-meter relay, which was the last event of the meet. Competing without two of its regular runners and needing to hold off East Stroudsburg for third place, Kutztown's quartet of Lisofsky, Mathews, Slack and Katie Colburn (Hanover/South Western) blazed the track in a season best time of 3:55.96. Kutztown finished fourth in the race, but more importantly ahead of ESU to secure third place.
“They showed a lot of heart today,” Kutztown track and field coach Ray Hoffman said. “They did an outstanding job today. I mean, Kristen stepped in and helped us run our fastest time of the season. We were down two girls, but it didn't stop the four who competed from doing well.”
Lisofsky led off with a 59.9 second split. The splits got faster as the race continued. Matthews posted a 59.1 split, Slack swooshed around the track in 58.8 and Colburn ran a scintillating anchor leg at 57.9. For Kutztown, it was a perfect way to close out an outstanding weekend.
