Schiavo earns NFCA second team honors

KUTZTOWN, PA (May 20, 2010) – Senior outfield Maria Schiavo was named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Division II All-Atlantic Region second team Thursday afternoon. (ALL-REGION TEAMS)

The 5 foot, 2 inch sparkplug ignited the Golden Bear offense from her leadoff spot in the batting order. Schiavo fueled Kutztown's 43-win season, its fourth straight year with at least 40 victories, and eight consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament. The honor was a fitting end to a great career for Schiavo, who is a two-time all-PSAC East first team selection.

This season, Schiavo compiled a .332 batting average, which was third on the team. She also tied for the team-lead with 69 hits scored. Schiavo scored 41 runs, smacked 16 doubles and drove in 21 runs. Schiavo led the Golden Bears with 22 multiple-hit games. She had three hits in seven of those contests. Schiavo finished her career by having two hits each in a victory over Shepherd and a season-ending defeat to California, Pa. She had three RBIs in the Shepherd game.

Schiavo enjoyed a memorable four years for the Golden Bears. She and fellow senior Katlin Arbogast (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon) are the only two members in Kutztown softball history to be a part of four straight 40 win seasons. Schiavo and Arbogast led KU to 180 victories. Schiavo ended her career with 257 hits, 156 runs scored, 92 runs batted in, 43 doubles and five triples.

Overall, this year's teams are comprised of 207 student-athletes from 91 institutions spread out over the eight NFCA regions, with a first and second team for each region. NFCA member coaches in each of the eight regions select the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region teams and all honorees are now eligible to be selected to one of three All-American teams.
