KUTZTOWN, PA (May 3, 2010) – A quartet of outstanding Kutztown University student-athletes will be honored by the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women at a luncheon at Starter’s Riverport in Bethlehem on Tuesday May 4, 2010. The luncheon begins at 12 p.m.
Kutztown’s Katlin Arbogast (softball), Cristina Reimer (cross-country) and Lauren Solley(field hockey) were named the most outstanding athletes in their respective sports. Senior swimmer Steph Jeppesen will also be recognized for being named the KU Senior Female Athlete of the Year.
Arbogast has enjoyed another sterling season for Kutztown. She won 24 games and had a 2.10 earned run average. She was third in the PSAC this season with 243 strikeouts. Recently, Arbogast became the first player in school history to strikeout 1,000 batters in her career. Arguably the most decorated pitcher in Kutztown history, Arbogast holds school records in strikeouts, wins (97), games (162), saves (eight), complete games (98), shutouts (28), and innings pitched (904).
Reimer helped the cross-country team finish second in the Atlantic Regional and 14th at the NCAA Division II national championships. Reimer, who earned all-regional honors, was the Golden Bears’ second highest finisher at the NCAA championships, finishing the course in 22 minutes, 33.5 seconds. She currently holds the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:53.01).
Solley was named second team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association. She enjoyed a memorable senior season to cap her career as a Golden Bear. She led the team in goals (13) and points (31), while her 1.63 goals per game average ranked 16th in Division II. In a September win over Catawba, Solley etched her name in the KU record books with a single-game record of five goals. The senior forward finished her career at KU with 19 goals and 44 points while playing in 52 games.
Jeppesen helped the Kutztown University swimming team enjoy its best season in school history. The Golden Bears finished fourth as a team at the PSAC championships and 16th at nationals. The Golden Bears also set a school record for wins with 15. At the PSAC championships, Jeppesen won three individual events: 100 breaststroke (1:03.99), 200 breaststroke (2:16.49) and 200 individual medley (2:04.59). At the NCAA championship meet, Jeppesen finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke in a school record and PSAC record setting time of 2:15.11 and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.23).
The history of the LVAIAW parallels the history of AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and the Title IX movement. The AIAW was founded in 1971 to govern collegiate women’s athletics in the United States and to administer national championships. Cedar Crest, DeSales, Kutztown, Lafayette, Lehigh, Moravian and Muhlenberg comprise the member institutions of the LVAIAW.
