KUTZTOWN, PA (June 23, 2010) -- The Kutztown University field hockey team will play 20 regular season matches, according to the 2010 schedule released on Monday. The 2010 slate is highlighted by 10 home games and a pair of contests against two-time NCAA Division II champion Bloomsburg. (CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE 2010 SCHEDULE)
Head coach Betty Wesner enters her 31st year at the helm of the Golden Bears, who will look to advance to the PSAC playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Kutztown ended last season with a 12-8 record. Kutztown will begin and end the season at home.
The Golden Bears start the season with three consecutive home matches beginning with Slippery Rock in their opener on Saturday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. The home stand continues when Kutztown hosts Shippensburg on Saturday, September 18 and Millersville on Tuesday, September 21. The Millersville game is the first of three home night matches for the Golden Bears.
Overall, Kutztown's home schedule features four Saturday morning contests, including a 9:00 a.m. homecoming faceoff against Limestone on Saturday, October 16.
The Golden Bears' hit the road for the first time on Saturday, September 25 when it visits Slippery Rock. That marks the start of Kutztown's longest road trip of the season, four matches. When Kutztown comes off the road, it will be greeted by Bloomsburg at University Field on Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m.
The major highlight of the 2009 season was a 2-1 victory over Bloomsburg on the road that snapped a 39-game, 26-year losing streak to the Huskies. The Golden Bears will not visit the site of their biggest triumph until Wednesday, November 3 when they play their penultimate road contest of the year. Kutztown closes the season with two home matches against Mercy College on Saturday, November 13 and Mansfield on Tuesday, November 16.
The conference semifinals and championship will be played the weekend of Friday & Saturday November 19 & 20.
Among some of the key players expected to return for the Golden Bears include sophomore Jenna Gregory, junior Katie Brautigan, junior Emily Falko, junior Kim Angstadt and senior Abbey Sheeler. Angstadt was a first team all-PSAC selection.
