KUTZTOWN, PA (July 12, 2010) – The Kutztown University women’s swimming team earned another honor as it was recognized for its classroom excellence by earning a place on the distinguished College Swimming Coaches Association of America 2010 Spring Semester Scholar All-America Team.

The Golden Bears posted a 3.30 overall team grade point average, which was the highest under veteran coach Tim Flannery. Kutztown’s overall GPA ranked it 13th nationally. This is the fourth consecutive season and sixth time in the last seven years, KU has earned a spot on the CSCAA Scholar-All-America Team.

This is a terrific ending to a phenomenal season for the Golden Bears. Kutztown finished fourth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships and tied for 16th at the NCAA Division II Championships. In addition Flannery was named PSAC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year.

“This is a really neat honor for our program and we are definitely proud of this recognition,” Flannery said. “This really demonstrates that our girls are not only serious swimmers, but that they are very dedicated and committed to excellence in the classroom.  As a coach, you couldn’t ask for anything more. This is a tribute to all of the hard work the young ladies put into their studies and pool all year. I am very proud of my team and the accomplishments. They did a great job all year and this just awesome.”

To earn CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors, a swim team must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the spring semester.

In addition, the following student-athletes were recognized by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as 2009-10 scholar-athletes: Kerry Choplin, Monica Fisher, Helena Hewitt, Stephanie Kearns, Kathryn Kelly, Lauren Malloy, Krista Schlupp, Allison Sheely and Heather Wolkom.
