KUTZTOWN, PA. (September 7, 2010)-- The Kutztown University golf team enters the 2010-11 season with high expectations, new talent, but more importantly experience. The Golden Bears had an outstanding season last year finishing second place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

The Golden Bears return their top three performers from last season. Junior Chelsea Corbo and sophomore Mindy Glatfelter were named to the 2009-10 PSAC all-conference team. Corbo finished the 2009-10 season with the best average in school history with an 83.6. She had a team-best 76 on the final round of the PSAC championships to place seventh.

In her freshman season, Glatfelter made an immediate impact finishing with an 84.8 average, which was the third all-time best single season average in program history. Glatfelter saved up her greatest performance for the season ending PSAC championships. She earned All-PSAC status after turning in a two round score of 156 (79-77) and placing sixth.

Corbo, Glatfelter and the rest of the Golden Bears start their much anticipated season this weekend at Bucknell University.

“We are all really excited to get going this weekend,” Kutztown University head golf coach Rob Fisher said.  “I have five experienced collegiate golfers returning and we added some new talented freshmen as well.  My returners are all good golfers and compete hard each and every round.”

Also bringing strength to the team is senior Samantha Rumbley, who finished 19th at the PSAC championships. Rumbley had her personal-best average in her junior year with an 85.0 which is tied for the fourth best single-season average all-time at KU.

Returning players junior Morgan Todd and sophomore Nina Antos look to assist the Golden Bears this season, as both players finished last season well. Todd finished off the season on a high note, placing tied for 26th at the PSAC championships. Her finest performance came at the Kutztown Invitational where she shot an 86 to finish 15th. Antos best finish came at the East Stroudsburg Invitational where she placed fourth.

Newcomers Devan Everett, Jackie Clifton, Tierney Sadowl, and Caitlyn Comunale are expected to produce and contribute to the team’s success this season.

“I have four new freshmen coming in this season,” Fisher said. “What is nice is that because we have a good group of returning golfers, our new girls will have some time to develop their games.”

The Golden Bears expect a season of growth, improvement, and excitement. After this weekend’s match, the Golden Bears will continue the season in tournaments hosted by Mercyhurst College, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Findlay. The fall portion of the season concludes with the PSAC championships at the Hershey Links on October 16-17.

“What excites me the most with my current team is how badly they want to win,” Fisher said.  “They fight hard for each and every shot and compete like crazy out there on the golf course.  Finally, the true family atmosphere we have on this current team is incredible.  Everyone really cares about one another and we all love spending time with each other.  That is the most exciting part of this current team.”
