Slippery Rock leads the all-times series 8-0 and captured its last win over the Golden Bears in 2009 with a 27-24 victory at University Field.
In 96 years of program history, Kutztown has never won a PSAC title. Its only appearance in a championship game was back in 1980 when it fell to Clarion, 15-14.
However the Golden Bears have not only met expectations for this season, they've by far surpassed them.
Junior quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) has been brilliant for Kutztown this year. Morton who plays with poise and intellect, showcases his remarkable decision-making and accuracy each time he steps on the field. Morton is two touchdown passes away from tying the school record for TDs in a career. Andy Breault currently holds the record with 86 TD passes thrown between 1989-92.
Morton is fifth in Division II in passing efficiency with a rating of 164.58. Additionally, Morton is 17th in total passing yards (2,620) and spearheads an effort that ranks 16th in the nation in total offense, and leads the PSAC, (490.9 yards per game).
Kutztown leads the PSAC in scoring offense (41.2/game) but will have to be impeccable when Slippery Rock brings the PSAC's top defense to University Field.
Morton's main man through the air is Smith who is one TD shy of tying the school record for career receiving TDs of 23 set by Mark Steinmeyer between 1988-91.
Frazier and
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) have also been top-notch for the Golden Bears. Frazier leads KU and ranks eighth in the PSAC in receiving yards (68.3). Mastromatto has 43 catches this season.
Frey is third in the PSAC in rushing yards (103.1) and is 21st in Division 11. Frey has 10 TDs on the year, the most by a KU running back since 2002. Kutztown is ranked second in the PSAC, averaging 224.1 yards per game on the ground. Mastromatto has scored 22 TDs in KU's last 21 games. Mastromatto and Frey are ranked second and fifth, respectively, in the PSAC in all-purpose yards. Mastromatto is averaging 166.8 yards/game, while Frey adds 135.8 a game.
Kutztown's third-down conversion is the best among the PSAC, converting 61 of 125 attempts (48.8). SRU has only allowed 39 of 140 opponent third down conversion attempts (27.9), which tops the conference.
SRU's rigid defense has been silencing opponents all season, outscoring them 309-160. Slippery Rock's defense, which leads the PSAC, is giving up just 246 yards a game. Its rushing defense also tops the conference (81.3/game), along with pass defense efficiency (92.4).
Slippery Rock's defensive unit is anchored by a plethora of players. Brandon Watters has seven interceptions with 10 breakups, 17 pass deflections, and one forced fumble. Jake Wickline has a team-high 80 tackles. Jeff Thompson has 14.5 tackles for loss, while
Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) leads the Rock in sacks with five.
Moss has been a quarterback's worst enemy this year as he leads KU with 12.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss. He is third in Division II in sacks per game (1.25) and leads the PSAC. Moss is sixth in the conference in tackles for loss (1.75).
Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) leads KU with 86 tackles and is fifth in the PSAC in tackles per game (8.6). Junior defensive back
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) has a conference-leading eight interceptions on the year. Kutztown's defense has gridlocked opponents this year. Bloomsburg's Franklyn Quiteh was the first player who rushed for over 100 yards against KU in six games.
Slippery Rock's offense is led by quarterback Cody Endres who is 201-of-335 in passing with 16 interceptions this season. Endres is averaging 231.8 yards a game which ranks fifth in the PSAC. His main target is receiver Devin Goda who has 10 TDs. Goda usually pulls in 96.1 receiving yards per contest, ranking third in the PSAC.
In last week's upset by Gannon, Endres was 22-of-49 in passing for 272 yards and two TDs. Endres also threw three interceptions. Goda caught nine passes for 131 yards on Saturday and has 69 passes for 961 yards this year, moving into third place on SRU's single-season pass charts. Goda is second in the PSAC in receptions per game (6.9).
Akeem Satterfield leads the rushing attack for the Rock, averaging 84.3 yards per game with six TDs on the season.
