KU Topples Gannon; Fisher Ties Wins Record

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A pin by Zach Marlatt (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) at 174 over regionally ranked Bret Terry broke open a tied match as Kutztown University went on to defeat Gannon 20-19 in a matchup of regionally ranked teams in Super Region I.

The win had deeper meaning, as well.  The victory gave Golden Bear head coach Robert Fisher 124 career wins, tying long time head and assistant coach Dan Hinkel atop the leaderboard at KU.

“It's great,” Fisher commented on the milestone. “(Coach) Hinkel's a legend.  He's been here forever through numerous stints as head coach, assistant coach.  He is Kutztown wrestling. So it's a great honor.”

Coach Fisher was equally excited about the key victory as his regionally ranked No. 5 Golden Bears held off No. 6 Gannon.

“We always have a big rivalry with Gannon,” Fisher noted.  “It's always a close match so we're really happy to get the win.  It's a great win for us.”

The match started out close before Marlatt's pin gave KU the first lead of any significance all afternoon.

“I just went out there with a positive attitude,” Marlatt said of the win over Terry.  “We got the ball rolling early and I just wanted to keep it rolling.  I saw some things there and took advantage of it and it just paid off.  Things were there at the time and I came up with the fall.”

After the Golden Knights won the match's opening bout at 125, Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)) (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) picked up a major decision over Adam Weinell in a matchup of regionally ranked wrestlers at 133.  Yenolevich scored four points in each of the first two periods for an 8-2 lead heading into the third, and the region's No. 3 wrestler kept the pressure on down the stretch.  The sophomore tacked on five more points in the third period and added a point for riding time to notch a 14-2 win that gave the Golden Bears a 4-3 lead.  Weinell entered the match ranked No. 6 in Super Region I.

Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) extended Kutztown's lead to 7-3 with a 3-0 decision in the bout at 141.  Voelker notched an escape and a takedown in the second period to account for all the scoring against Scott Bulzan.

Nationally ranked Ethan Swope scored a 9-1 major decision at 149 to tie the team scoring at 7-7.  At 157, a decision in favor of the Golden Knights swung the team scoring back in their favor 10-7.

Micah Bollinger (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg Area) (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) continued his hot streak as the reigning PSAC Co-Wrestler of the Week used a late reversal to secure an 8-4 decision over Adam Greenman at 165 to tie the score at 10-10.

At 174, Marlatt notched a huge win for KU, pinning Super Region I's No. 6 wrestler in just 2:30 to take a commanding 16-10 lead.  It was his fourth win by fall this season and came at a big point in the match to swing momentum in favor of the home team.

The next bout saw Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) (Reading, Pa./Reading) rack up over three and a half minutes of riding time to seal a 10-2 major decision over Keith Stoerr.

Marlatt was not surprised by the team's strong performance.  “We just wrestled really hard today.  We got a good week of practice in and I think we wrestled well at the Regional Duals.  We just kept that momentum going here against a regionally ranked opponent. “

The Golden Knights picked up the win with a decision at 197, but by allowing only three total team points, the bout locked up the victory for Kutztown.  Gannon also registered a win by injury default at 285 for the final score.

Kutztown will look for its fourth straight win when American International visits Keystone Arena on February 4 at 7 p.m.
