No. 2 Kutztown falls 1-0 to Bloomsburg in extra innings

DRIFTON, Pa. (April 26, 2012)—Top-seeded Kutztown University fell 1-0 to second-seed Bloomsburg University in nine innings during the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at the ASA of PA Jake Kislan Softball Complex, Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (44-3 overall) are currently ranked second in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 poll, which is the highest mark in program history. 

Kutztown will face Shippensburg University at 4 p.m. on Thursday in an elimination game. The Red Raiders (18-25) snapped KU's 33-game winning streak last week. They handed the Golden Bears its first shut out of the season in a 1-0 defeat.

The Golden Bears went the distance with the Huskies (32-12) but were only able to mount four hits. This is Bloomsburg's second extra inning game in the PSAC Championships as it took nine innings to get by Gannon, 9-1 in the opening round on Wednesday.

Bloomsburg tallied seven hits but used three consecutive hits in the ninth inning to take the win.

Sam Pientack led off with a hit to left field, followed by another hit from Rachel Fredall. With runners on first and second, Hannah Moir's single to centerfield was the game-winning hit that allowed Pientack to score.

Kutztown came close in the top of the ninth inning after Kelly Strittmatter (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills) (Wyckoff, NJ/ Indian Hills) led off with a single. With two outs, Heather Hannum (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) singled to centerfield but Strittmatter was thrown out at third.

Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg) each recorded a hit.

Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) (Lititz, Pa./ Warwick) faced her first loss of the season and has a record of 26-1. Derr finished with four strikeouts.

The Huskies advanced to the semifinals and will face the winner of the Lock Haven-Indiana (Pa.) game on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m.
