KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team will play Shaw University in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional tournament hosted by Bluefield State College in West Virginia on Sunday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Bluefield City Courts.
The winner of the Kutztown-Shaw match will advance to the Atlantic Region 1 Final to face Bluefield State, with the winner punching their ticket to the national championships in Surprise, Arizona beginning on May 8. If weather affects the matches, the contests will be moved to the Virginia Tech Tennis Center. All matches are free admission.
Kutztown didn't have to wait long once the Selection Show begun to find out who it would play in the first round. Kutztown was the first school named as the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Region. Shaw is the No. 5 seed is the region.
This is Kutztown's 13th appearance in the NCAA Division II championship tournament. The Golden Bears are 16-12 overall in the NCAA tournament since making their first appearance in 1998.
The Golden Bears last NCAA Regional appearance was in 2011 when it was one match away from advancing to the final 16 teams at the national tournament. KU has advanced to the Sweet 16 five times since 2004 with the most recent coming in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Shaw earned an at-large bid after ranking third in the region going into CIAA Tournament play, where it lost to Winston-Salem State in the semifinals.
The winner of the match between the Golden Bears and Golden Bears will face host and No. 1 seed Bluefield State, who is 20-3. The winner of that match will advance to the NCAA Tournament to be held in Surprise, Ariz., on May 8-11.
The other half of the region features No. 2 Charleston (WV), who will meet seventh seed WSSU in the opening round. The winner of that game will face off against the winner of the match between Shepherd and West Virginia Wesleyan.
