KU's Live Stats for Thursday's Second Elimination Game
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. –
Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford)'s solo home run in the top of the sixth inning propelled the Kutztown University softball team to a 3-2 win in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship elimination game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania Thursday morning at Veterans Park.
The solo-shot broke a 2-2 tie, and Kutztown's (30-14)
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) shut the door in the bottom of the seventh after IUP (27-19) loaded the bases with one out to preserve the win.
With the victory, Kutztown now has 30 wins on the season, making it the 11th time in the past 12 seasons that KU has reached the season-milestone (13th overall in program history).
Kutztown started the game fast, getting a
Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) two-run homer in the top of the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead. It is the second-straight day the senior third baseman has homered.
IUP responded in the bottom of the second, with a two-run single by Lauren Goetz to knot the game up at two.
Newman played hero in the top of the sixth with her solo-shot to break the tie. IUP loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Nierintz got the final two batters to pop and then ground out to seal the victory.
The Golden Bears return to the diamond with another elimination game in the next round, this time against the loser of Gannon/Bloomsburg at 2 p.m. at Veterans Park.
