Men's swimming competes in pair of meets at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's swim team took part in the Crimson Hawk Fall Invitational and IUP Sprint Frenzy on Friday afternoon, coming away with a pair of PSAC qualifying times and a program top 10.

Freshman Nevin Shaw (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was the lone PSAC qualifier for KU in the Crimson Hawk Fall Invitational. Shaw broke one minute in the 100-yard breaststroke for the first time in his collegiate career, setting the second-fastest time in program history with a 59.56 to post the second-best time in the event of 13 swimmers.

The Lansdale, Pa., native moved up from sixth on KU's top 10 list after registering a time of 1:00.69 in the Bears' season opener against Shippensburg. Shaw moved to within .28 of Brad Borek's school record time of 59.28 set back in 2004.

Matheson Bair (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) placed third of 12 competitors in the 200 individual medley with a 2:04.22.

Bair would go on to pick up a PSAC qualifying time in the 50 freestyle during the IUP Sprint Frenzy with a 22.26 that ranked fifth of 14 swimmers.

The second meet of the day featured a number of 50-yard strokes, events that are not contested at the PSAC Championships outside of the 50 free.

Shaw was the top-finishing Golden Bear, taking fourth in both the 50 breaststroke (27.93) and 100 IM (55.96).

Kutztown will next face Montclair State on the road, Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m.
