West Virginia State cools down Cal

WEST LAWN, PA (May 14, 2010) – Ryne Holstine pitched eight innings of two-hit ball and Bo Darby swung a big bat to lead fourth seeded West Virginia State to a 7-2 victory over sixth seeded California University of Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon on Owls Field at Ted Palka Park. (Boxscore)

The Yellow Jackets (32-15) will meet first seeded Kutztown at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game, while the Vulcans (33-17) will take on the loser of West Chester and Seton Hill beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time getting on the board with a single up the middle by Robert Hawkins then Darby unleashed a home run well over the 385 sign in left center field.

An inning later Bill Smith walked and came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman to build an early 3-0 advantage.

Holstine was brilliant on the mound, facing the minimum amount of Vulcans through five innings. A Sean Welsh to single to start the sixth ended the no-hit bid, but Holstine got a fly out and double play to keep the minimum amount of batters.

California rallied in the ninth, but it was a little too late. Troy Handza doubled to center and Adam Links recorded an RBI double down the right field line, it was his second hit of the game. Chuck Faust had an RBI double to left center, but Evan Kendall forced a groundout to first to end the game.
