KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's cross country team placed fourth out of 12 teams on Saturday morning in the sixth-annual 8K Division II/III Challenge hosted by the Golden Bears at the Farm Course on North Campus.
 
Sophomore Steve Maine (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) led the way for KU, finishing the race in eighth place with a time of 26:32.1. He recorded the best individual performance for the Golden Bears at the Division II/III Challenge since Zach Fleming finished fifth in 2013 with a time of 25:54.7.

Behind Maine for the Golden Bears was junior CJ Bauer (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) in 19th place, finishing the course in 27:10.8.
 
Jack Inglis (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), Justin Gum (Bath, Pa./Nazareth) and Mark Pfaeffle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) comprised the next group of KU runners to cross the line. Inglis took 30th place in 27:36.4, while Gum ranked 33rd at 27:43.9. Pfaeffle ran 27:48.0 and finished in 36th.
 
Michael Diecidue (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) crossed the finish line at 27:54.3 in 39th. Freshman Mark Arzie (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) captured 54th with a time of 28:27.0, and Jose Colon-Cruz (Pemberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) ran 28:35.5 – good for 58th.
 
Jared Luckanitz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Danny Monteith (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) rounded out the Golden Bear crusade, finishing in 72nd and 91st, respectively, with times of 29:17.9 and 30:31.7.

Shippensburg captured the team victory, as seven out of the top 13 spots belonged to the Raiders. American International runners captured each of the top two spots individually, with Mitchell Byrne winning the race with a time of 25:52.2 and John Chirchir taking second at 25:52.4.
 
Up next for the Maroon and Gold is the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, Oct. 2 at 12:15 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
